Revisiting Data and Trends in

Canada's Retirement Landscape

Over the last decade the programs and tools available to the Canadian workforce under the traditional 3-pillar retirement system have certainly evolved. From enhanced CPP & OAS coverage, the rapid expansion of defined-contribution style plans and the corresponding focus on decumulation, phased retirement, and the ever-growing presence of large and jointly sponsored defined benefit and target benefit plans, it would seem the Canadian workforce should have everything they need to plan for a secure and stable retirement.

During this in-person event Phillips, Hager & North portfolio manager Jeff Roberts will discuss the economic realities currently facing Canadians and the impact they are having on retirement-related decisions. In light of these challenges Danielle Hughes (Mercer) will provide an overview of the 3-pillar retirement system used in Canada, how it has evolved recently, and provide insights into trends we are currently seeing from a workforce perspective.

After lunch the session will shift to focus on a real-life example of how variable-pay life annuities are being used to tackle certain retirement challenges facing Canadians. Laura Strachan (Eckler Ltd.) will discuss the process used to setup and implement a VPLA program along with its use cases.

In the final session of the day legal representative Kiersten Amos (McInnes Cooper) will discuss the duties, practical and educational approaches plans should use to engage with and understand the ever-changing needs of their membership in light of some of topics discussed during the day.

The Atlantic Regional Council of ACPM is pleased to present this in-person event at the Delta Beausejour in beautiful Moncton on May 23rd, 2024. We look forward to seeing you there!
